A martial art related to western boxing, but incorporating strikes with the legs. Alpha MMA kickboxing is a combination of conditioning, flexibility and well regulated striking techniques. Kickboxing is popular as a fun fitness activity as well as an effective martial art. Participants can compete in several levels of kickboxing, ranging from points and light contact, to continuous fighting to full contact.
Kickboxing has been around in various forms for thousands of years. Practiced for centuries in Thailand as Muay Thai, the spectacular competitions involve devastating kicks and strikes with the hands, knees and elbows.
North American and European kickboxing has evolved in to a much more restrained and safer sport. Competitors can only use hands and feet, and kicking only allowed above the waist in most competitions.
Having its roots in Karate of the 1960’s and 1970’s, it started as the Professional Kickboxing Association (PKA) and spawned many legends like:
- Bill “Superfoot” Wallace,
- Benie “The Jet” Equidez,
- Don “The Dragon” Wilson and
- Canadian legend Jean-Yves “Iceman” Theriault
Kickboxing and its derivatives are monitored and controlled by several governing and standardizing bodies. Kickboxing has now been a mainstream activity for fitness and competition for years!
Now kickboxing is practiced and enjoyed everywhere. It is popular with all types of participants of both sexes and any skill level. It is not uncommon to see parents training in kickboxing while children train in MMA class!
